Artist Statement:
The sculpture collection titled Campsite reflects my perception of the short story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. This story reflects themes of isolation, disgust, and exposure. By exposure, I mean exposed to the elements as Gregor was thrown into life as a bug in a world of humans where he no longer fit in. I represented this sense of exposure by creating a sleeping bag that one would have outside in a campsite. I also created a fire in this piece as fires are normally seen in campsites but decided to make it into a fireplace that belongs inside a house as there were still elements of Gregor on the inside that remained human. The main focal point of this piece is the portrait of Gregor and his family as I was able to paint with ink the isolation Gregor felt from his family. I did this by representing him in a dark gray color that blended into the black background rendering him almost invisible alongside his brightly colored family members. Gregor is represented by a garbage can as he felt like trash not only when he was turned into a bug but after he went from a high-ranking lieutenant in the military to a simple traveling salesman. Through Campsite I was able to represent the feelings of isolation, disgust, and exposure that Gregor felt in The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.
